If your gums hurt, redden and bleed after brushing, you probably have gingivitis. You will also recognize it by the fact that you suffer from bad breath and the gums are not firmly attached to the tooth. Mouth pains are extremely annoying and not only spoil your food, but also disturb you when you speak or even fall asleep.
Try the following products against gingivitis before you go to your dentist. However: If you are often plagued by inflamed gums or your inflammation lasts longer than a few days despite treatment of the symptoms, you should leave the treatment of gingivitis to the professional.
Home remedy for healthy gums
Before you use mouthwashes from the pharmacy, first check which types of tea are stored in your larder. Sage or chamomile tea has a calming effect and helps to alleviate inflammation in the mouth. Simply boil a tea, leave to cool and gargle several times a day for about 30 seconds. But be careful: gargling tea that is too hot will irritate your gums and can even worsen gum inflammation.
Homeopathy: Globules against gingivitis
Homeopathy offers alternative possibilities for the treatment of gingivitis. Depending on your symptoms, a dentist specialising in natural remedies will prescribe different globules. For example, Mercurius Solubilis is said to help with fast bleeding gums or Silicea with painful gums. In any case, you should seek advice from a doctor or pharmacy before taking any medication, even if you are on a herbal basis.
Prevention is the best cure for gingivitis
If you follow a few simple tips, you won’t have to deal with painful, bloody gums in the future. The most important thing is to ensure good oral hygiene in general. Brush your teeth twice a day, as recommended by your dentist, and floss the interdental spaces thoroughly. Do not consume too much sweets or sugary drinks: they also cause bacterial deposits in the interdental spaces, which cause the gums to inflame.
In order to maintain good oral hygiene, it is particularly important to refrain from smoking. In addition to many other health risks, the tar contained in cigarettes also promotes the development of inflammation in the mouth.
Fighting gum inflammation with mouthwashes
Sometimes it is very difficult to remove plaque in the interdental spaces – especially if your teeth are very close to each other. With a toothbrush or dental floss, you usually do not completely remove any food left behind after meals.
To prevent gingivitis from breaking out in the first place, rinse your mouth regularly with antibacterial mouthwash. Mouthwashes reduce the number of bacteria in the mouth and thus reduce the risk of gum inflammation caused by deposits. Mouthwashes with chlorhexidine are often recommended. These fight bacteria in the mouth very effectively.

Fighting inflammation with mouthwash – sensible?
If it burns in your mouth and swelling spreads, you suffer from a painful gingivitis:
To fight the inflammation, a mouthwash is recommended. In addition to the homemade version, you can also use a mouthwash from a pharmacy or an ordinary rinse from a drugstore.
- Tip: Apply some of the conditioner to the back of your hand and let it take effect. If there are no reactions, you can tolerate the conditioner. However, if the skin reddens strongly or even burns a little, we advise you to abstain.
- An antibacterial mouthrinse combats the inflammation directly and, if used regularly, ensures that you are less likely to develop inflammations in the mouth. Antibacterial rinses can be recognised by their chlorhexidine content, which also combats tooth decay.
- Important: If you have small wounds in your mouth, they will burn heavily when you use the mouthwash. This is caused by the ingredients contained. A more pleasant remedy with a similar effect is sage tea. It is also antibacterial and contains natural substances.
- In the case of gingivitis, the outer gums are affected. Therefore, even the slightest contact with the brush causes great pain. In such cases it can be useful to clean the areas near the gums only very easily and to use the rinse for the time of the inflammation.
- If the inflammation persists, consult a dentist. In severe cases you will be given special medication so that the inflammation can be combated effectively.
